How to Give a Great Hostess Gift

The invitation came, you RSVPd, and now the panic begins. What should I get the host/hostess? Should I send something before, after, or should I bring it to their house? Choosing an appropriate host/hostess gift can be time consuming and somewhat frustrating, but there are a few ideas that will work over and over again.

If you are going to a dinner party, wine is always appreciated. If you know that the host or hostess has a favorite wine, try and bring that variety. There are a lot of great wines out on the market that wont break your bank.

Scented candles are a great host/hostess gift. They can be used in any room of the house and smell wonderful. Candles come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, so you are sure to find something for every taste.

Gourmet cookies, brownies, or cakes are perfect for bringing the host because it is something that can be shared and enjoyed by the whole party. If you dont have a favorite bakery nearby, try some of the bakeries online that will ship their delicious treats nationwide.

What better way to say thank you than with flowers or a potted plant? Flowers are the classic hostess gift because they have the ability to brighten up any room. Bamboo plants have become popular gifts in the past few years because they are said to bring the homeowner good fortune.

For the host or hostess that is a chocoholic, there is no better way to show your appreciation than with a box of chocolates. Many stores sell the boxes pre-wrapped, so this is an easy gift to get if you are in a hurry. For a variation on the chocolate idea, try chocolate dipped strawberries.

Another great gift idea is pewter. Whether you give a pewter serving tray or a pewter candy dish, pewter is a gift that will last a lifetime. Pewter is easy to take care of and looks great in any home.

Try to stay away from gift certificates. Although most people enjoy receiving them, gift certificates are often seen as impersonal. By planning ahead and having some of these items on hand, you can avoid the pre-party panic and the hours spent in the mall.

Rod Stewart Grabs Fourth No.1 Album with New Release

Rod Stewarts comeback rock release in eight years earned him his fourth No. 1 album on the US pop albums chart with 184,304 copies sold in the week, according Nielsen SoundScan data provided by the veteran rocker's J Records label.

"Still the Same ... Great American Rock Classics of Our Time" features Bob Seger-written title track, Bob Dylan's "If Not For You" and Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" -- is Stewart's first No. 1 rock album since 1979's "Blondes Have More Fun." His other chart-toppers were the Grammy-winning "Stardust ... The Great American Songbook: Volume III" in 2004 and 1971's "Every Picture Tells A Story."

The previous week's champ, goth-pop band Evanescence's "The Open Door" slipped to No. 2 with 164,000 copies.

Billboard. Rapper Lloyd Banks' second set, "Rotten Apples," bowed at No. 3 with 143,000 units. His 2004 debut, "The Hunger for More," debuted at No. 1.

Jimmy Buffetts "Take the Weather With You" stands at the fourth spot of the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart with 121,000 units. His 2004 release, "License To Chill," debuted at No. 1 in 2004 with 239,000.

Tony Bennett's "Duets: An American Classic" fell one place to No. 5 in its second week with 105,000 units.

Rod Stewart can be regarded as the rock generation's heir to Sam Cooke. Like Cooke, Stewart delivers both romantic ballads and uptempo material with conviction and panache, and he sings in a warm, soulful rasp.

Before his notoriety as an international "Ladies Man" and football fanatic, Rod Stewart started his musical career as a credible artist.

After an unsuccessful apprenticeship with Brentford football club, Rod joined Long John Baldry's group, The Hoochie Coochie Men, in 1964.

A year later and a name change to Steampacket, the band was supporting the Rolling Stones on tour. Rod had his first nationwide exposure when he joined the Jeff Beck Group, as lead vocalist, in 1966.

When the group disbanded, Rod Stewart joined The Faces, who quickly earned themselves a reputation of being a boozy, boisterous rock and roll band. For the next six years, Rod would run a parallel solo career, which drew critical acclaim for the warmth of his song writing style.

In 1971, the song 'Maggie May' was his first Number One hit internationally, and was later named as one of the '500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll'.

A bitter squabble with a tax collector sent rod Stewart packing to the glitzy Los Angeles a move which the singer underlined by the album title 'Atlantic Crossing' and the anthemic single 'Sailing'.

The release of Da Ya Think Im Sexy not only marked a turning point in Rods musical styles, it also sealed the singer's image as a swaggering, preening ladies' man with the tabloids. The critics turned on his more pop-sounding approach as a sell-out to that era's disco trend.

His career came full circle in 1993 when he recorded Unplugged...and Seated for MTV's "Unplugged" series, reuniting with his erstwhile collaborator, Ron Wood, for a run-through of vintage material.

In 1998, he recorded one of his strongest albums in years, When We Were the New Boys, which harked back to the rough-and-tumble rock of the Faces era while paying respect to newer acts whod come along in their wake, such as Oasis, Graham Parker and Elvis Costello.

Tonights the Night marked Rods enduring appeal, at London's Victoria Palace theatre, featuring many of Stewart's biggest hits. Most recently, Rod has successfully concentrated on singing standards from the 1930s and 1940s for 'The Great American Songbook'.

His interpretation of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, the Gershwins and other great American songwriters may have met with mixed critical response, but it has been massively successful with the public. Great sales have resulted in two volumes so far, and a third will be released shortly.

Rod Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in January 19, 1994

at the ninth annual induction dinner.

Stop Burning BridgesOr Your Career Might Go Up In Flames!

Hey, nobody said the music business was going to be easy. It truly is a jungle out there filled with: snakes, rats, rabid carnivores, sharkswell, you get the picture. In the course of your musical journey, there will be confrontations, arguments, misunderstandings, and miscommunications. Youll get jerked around, screwed over, ripped off and disrespected. So, you want to be a rockstar? Welcome to your nightmare.

But this is also a business of good people, wholl give you opportunities and chances and help you out when you least expect it. Thats why its so important that you, as musicians and as a band, act professionally and respectfully regardless of the behavior of those you encounter. You dont have to be a pushover and of course, you have a right to defend yourself against the questionable actions of others, but the music community can be a very small town and the behavior you exhibit will follow you throughout your musical career.

On the flipside of that, there are musicians out there who, either knowingly or unknowingly bring negativity on themselves through their own actions. Short temperedness, egocentricism, brazen entitlement, compulsive lying and just plain old psychotic behavior can brand your band as troublemakers and deprive you of important opportunities that you need to move forward in this business.

So, how can you make sure that youre doing onto others as you wish they would do onto you? What can you, as musicians do, to eliminate aspects of your personality that may be causing bad blood between you and the people you run across on your way to superstardom?

The following are a few tips that may help you to make sure youre exhibiting professional behavior at all times:

1.) Be Timely And Courteous---Whether youre playing out live or emailing booking inquiries from home, there is never a substitute for courteously or timeliness. At gigs, show up when youre supposed to, be friendly, treat others with respect, set up quickly, end your set on time, break down quickly, be mindful of other bands on stage, compliment those around you and dont forget simple things like, please and thank you. When you leave a positive impression in peoples minds, youll be high on their list when it comes time to fill an open booking slot, recommend a band for a review, etc.

2.) Make Sure Your Actions Match Your Words---Its such a simple thing but youd be surprised how many musicians seem incapable to doing what they say theyre going to. If you book a gig, show up and play. If you say youre going to bring twenty friends and fans to your gig, do it. If you reserve an ad in a local music magazine, pay for it. If you write a check, make sure that it doesnt bounce. If you say youre going to send out a press package or a CD, mail it. It is true that many people in the music business are distrustful of bands that they dont know, and with good reason in many instances. Build your good reputation in the industry by proving that you will do what youve promised. Start small. Once youve gain peoples trust, youll see more and more doors opening up for your band.

3.) Take The High Road---It may be tough but theres nothing to be gained from returning someones improper behavior with a heap-load of your own. That doesnt mean that you need to let every industry slime-bag from New York to LA ride roughshod all over your music project but there are ways to deal with the negative behavior in this business without branding yourself with a label equally as negative. Sending firm yet professional letters, making intelligent and informed phone inquiries and, if need be, taking legal action against those who have acted inappropriately are ways to handle unpleasant situations without drawing negative attention to yourself. Public scenes, yelling and screaming, long-winded and ranting emails, threats and accusations and spiteful actions may make you feel vindicated but it may chase away the good people as well as the bad and that just sets your band back.

4.) You Cant Undo What Youve Already Done---Its much harder to undo past bad behaviors, or reverse negative reputations than it is to foster positive ones. Its best when starting out to avoid acting rash as a rule. If you have a band member that is incapable of keeping his or her cool, perhaps its time to rethink his or her place in your group. The entertainment industry has a long memory and a spiteful tongue. Make sure when people speak of you, theyre speaking well.

This may all seem like such common sense that it isnt even worth mentioning but youd be surprised how many shows, interviews, tours, and record deals have never materialized because of burned bridges. You may have talent and great tunes, but if your attitude sucks youll get passed over time and again. No one wants to work with rage-aholics, egomaniacs or crazies. Dont let anyone think thats what your band is about. Sure its important to be creative geniuses but if no one likes you, youll be performing your masterpieces in the garage for grandma and her Pomeranian. Get smart and treat people right and you may find yourself rockin all the way to the bank.

All In The Family (Season 3) DVD Review

The #1 Nielsen rated program from 1971 to 1976, All In The Family is quite simply one of the greatest television programs in history. Inspired by The Honeymooners and The Flintstones, All In The Family features its own loud-mouthed, opinionated blowhard sporting a hidden soft and sensitive side. Like Ralph Kramden and Fred Flintstone, Archie Bunker fulfills his role to absolute perfection, and the result is TV magic. Well-written and outright hilarious, All In The Family broke ground in the 70's with its willingness to tackle all the social issues and societal taboos of its day. Topics included racism, bigotry, sexism, homosexuality, death, and other namby-pam, socialist and liberal-feminist ideals (or at least that's how Archie would put it!) A titan among television sitcoms, All In The Family spawned a pair of shows which topped the ratings in their own right - Maude and The Jeffersons

Carroll O'Connor plays the role of Archie Bunker, the titular head of the Bunker household. Loud and crass, Archie freely dispenses his bigoted remarks and ignorant comments from the living room of his Queens, New York home. Joining Archie is his loving and ditsy wife Edith (Jean Stapelton), his beautiful and progressive daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), and her ultra-liberal husband Mike (Rob Reiner) whom Archie refers to as "Meathead". As Gloria and Mike's modern ideas clash with Archie's old school beliefs, all hell breaks loose in the Bunker household, but the Bunkers don't spend all their time arguing as they're inevitably held together by the immutable bond of love

The All In The Family (Season 3) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "Archie and the Editorial" in which Archie ardently defends his anti-gun control views on a TV editorial show, only to be held up by a pair of muggers wielding a gun when he leaves the station. The incident causes Archie to transform into a gun control advocate Other notable episodes from Season 3 include "Lionel Steps Out" in which Lionel Jefferson takes Archie's niece out on the town (peeving Archie who believes whites and blacks don't mix), and "Mike's Appendix" in which Archie and Gloria fight over the credentials of female doctors when Mike is forced to have an emergency appendectomy

RP200a: Creating New Patches and Developing Your Signature Sound

Much of the information about the RP200A Artist Amp Modeling Multi-Effects Processor centers around the 80 artists and factory preset patches that come with the unit. Sounding like your favorite guitarists is a great goal. This allows you to play songs at gigs that band mates know and the audience already loves.

But if you think about it, your favorite artist had to develop their own original sound. Maybe they piggybacked from someone else's sound, too. If you've owned the RP200A Modeling Guitar Processor for any length of time, it's time to step out from behind these preset patches and begin to develop your sound.

What defines you? When are you going to sound like...you? Do you feel confident to start writing your own songs and patches? Stop focusing on the 80 presets. Begin punching your 40 patches into the storage containers that Digitech has given you. The best way to think about it is you have 40 original songs that you need to write.

How do you start creating your signature sound? Here are 5 tips to help you begin developing your own sound and patches.

[1] Think about other musical instruments. Piano, organ, slide guitar, oboe, harp, harmonica, bass, and trumpet sounds should all be punched into your unit. Create songs around these "instruments".

[2] Think about sounds for ideas. How would "clouds rolling across the sky" sound? What would a "revolution" sound like? What would be a great sound for "fear"? How about a "patriotic flag"?

[3] Start mixing guitar sounds with other earthly tones. How about distortion with a cello? What about backslap with a train off in the distance? I'd love to hear a bass guitar mimicking a huge dinosaur walking through a forest!

[4] Check out the Digitech RP200a forums for patches that users have submitted. If you're trying to develop your own sound, punch a couple of these user patches into your unit.

[5] Visit my site at http://rp200a.home.comcast.net for a comprehensive listing of all 80 of the patches that come with the DigiTech RP200A Modeling Guitar Processor. You can start from these patches to develop your own.

In conclusion, you can start making a name for yourself by writing patches for your songs. Don't worry if you can't sing. Write down your lyrics and let someone else belt out your original songs. Every cover band should include at least one song that defines them and your guitar should play a huge part in every original tune. Remember, original is as original does!

CSI (Season 3) DVD Review

Nominated for 20 Emmys and 6 Golden Globes, including Best TV Series - Drama, CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) quickly rose to become the number one show on television following its Fall 2000 premiere. The brainchild of creator Anthony Zuiker, the show follows the investigations not of traditional TV detectives working the streets, but forensic scientists who unravel complicated crime mysteries in their ultra-modern laboratory. Either the #1 or the #2 Nielsen rated show since the start of its second season, CSI has helped CBS to reemerge as the #1 network television station, spawning (similar to predecessor Law & Order) two series spin-offs CSI: Miami and CSI: New York. Each exciting hour-long episode begins with the theme song "Who Are You" by The Who, a song more than befitting of a show where criminals are aggressively tracked down, sometimes years after committing their crimes

CSI focuses on the Las Vegas Police Department's Crime Scene Investigation nightshift unit headed by Gil Grissom (William Petersen), a quirky outsider whose obsessive quest for the facts and dedication to his work dominates his life. The CSI team is composed of a number of individuals with differing backgrounds and personalities - single mother Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) specializes in blood-splatter analysis, the highly competitive Nick Stokes (George Eads) specializes in hair and fiber analysis, recovering gambling addict Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan) specializes in audio/visual analysis, and the rambunctious Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) specializes in materials and element analysis. Throw in hard-nosed homicide captain Jim Brass (Paul Guifoyle), CSI understudy Greg Sanders (Eric Szmanda), and lab coroner Al Robbins (Robert David Hall) and all the ingredients are present for a show wrought with suspense, drama, and tension. As transients from all walks of life travel to Las Vegas to enjoy the wonders of its adult playground, increased levels of crime accompany them, and the team at CSI is determined to stay a step ahead of the criminal element

The CSI (Season 3) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere "Revenge is Best Served Cold" in which Catherine and Nick investigate an underground street racing league when one of the contestants is found dead at an abandoned airstrip just outside of town. Meanwhile, Grissom and the others are forced to investigate the mysterious death of a high stakes poker player when he drops dead in the middle of a game with three others Other notable episodes from Season 3 include "Recipe for Murder" in which Grissom and Catherine investigate a gruesome murder at a meat packing plant, and "A Night at the Movies" in which the CSI team investigates the murder of a movie-goer who was stabbed to death in mid-film

THE VULCAN AND THE REDHEAD How Lucy Became the Power behind Starfleet

40 Years of Star Trek celebrated in Hollywood on November 14

Pop quiz. What do Lucille Ball, an ex-cop and a certain pointy-eared, green skinned alien have in common? Believe it or not, the cop and the Vulcan both worked for the redheaded comic icon during the early days of Star Trek.

Writer/producer Gene Roddenberrys military drama, The Lieutenant, caught the attention of senior executives at Desilu Productions, the production company owned by

Lucille Ball. By the early 1960s, Desilu was one of the most successful production companies in television and looking to expand and Gene Roddenberry was one of the writer/producers recruited by the studio.

Because Desilu had a first look deal with CBS, they originally took Star Trek there, only to be told that the network had already bought a science fiction show from producer Irwin Allen and just wanted ideas for what would become Lost in Space. Shortly thereafter, they successfully sold NBC on shooting a pilot.

Gene Roddenberry was an idealist in many ways and wanted Star Trek to reflect his own ideas of equality and social justice, making it the first network series to feature people of multiple nationalities, races and even species working together in that first pilot, The Cage. But apparently he crossed the line when he cast a woman, actress Majel Barrett, as the ships second in command.

NBC liked the concept, but hated the pilot, ordering a second one and in the process demoting Ms. Barrett from Executive Officer to nurse. But she ultimately married the boss and became the only actor to have been in every Star Trek series (Shes the voice of the ships computer on all the Trek series and had a recurring role in Star Trek: The Next Generation). As for that second pilot, it sold the series to NBC and began what would become one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.
